From the recording Religion

Lyrics

As a child I was taught to never stray
from the strictures of a straight and narrow way.
Playing a game of damnation/salvation
left me longing for peace and joy in my heart.

When you found me I had lost my way
“I can help you” is what I heard you say
and you offered me some religion,
and you told me I should make a new start.

Lead me to the gates of elation.
Keep me away from all harm.
Let us find grace in the gentle embrace of each other’s arms.

What do you make of the history
of religions? Are you pained to see
crusades, crucifixions, and inquisitions?
Holy war is an oxymoron.

Buddha’s footprints may show us the way.
Let compassion grow with me each day.
Jesus gives us the gift of forgiveness.
Let me be meek holding love in my heart.

Lead me to the gates of elation.
Keep me away from all harm.
Let us find grace in the gentle embrace of each other’s arms.

Worshipers use drugs and alcohol.
Gods and demons beckon with their call.
Heed them: they may take you to heaven;
answer: they may cause you to fall.

Of religions what is there to say?
Do they darken or illuminate the way?
And as you offer me some religion
won’t you do so holding love in your heart?

Lead me to the gates of elation.
Keep me away from all harm.
Let us find grace in the gentle embrace of each other’s arms.
