John Raymond Pollard: Lyrics & Listen

Time

I wrote "Time" in loving memory of my cousin, Paul H. Simon, who passed last year. Paul's life was an inspiration. Via his athletic prowess, he earned a full college scholarship and eventually was named to the US Olympic team as a gymnast. After school he took his chances being an artist in NY. He performed acrobatic stunts for a number of Metropolitan Opera productions. I saw him in a stage role in New York's Shakespeare in the Park. Paul developed an operatic voice and I had the pleasure of hearing him perform with the Amato Opera Company.

A few years ago, Paul was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). It was heartbreaking to watch the deterioration of someone who was so talented and had been in such great physical condition. When I learned that he was no longer able to feed himself and had lost the will to live I began work on the song. He passed shortly thereafter.

Now at low tide the beach is wide.
I see an opening today.
With open eyes beneath bright skies
Today I think I found the way.

Time will wait for nobody.
In the dimension of time
It’s not too late; don’t hesitate.
Make the best of your time.

Each grain of sand held in your hand
Is like a gem stone on display.
Stars in the sky shine on our eyes
And we traverse the Milky Way.

Time will wait for nobody.
In the dimension of time
It’s not too late; don’t hesitate.
Make the best of your time.

And maybe we shall live forever
Or never see another day.
We live and learn; the planet turns.
We wake with yearning every day.

Time will wait for nobody.
In the dimension of time
It’s not too late; don’t hesitate.
Time will wait for nobody.
In the dimension of time
It’s not too late; don’t hesitate.
Make the best of your time.
